I am an author who has had my work plagiarized - that is, someone stole my words and used them as their own. This is not the only reason I have very little tolerance for plagiarism, but it certainly helps me to understand how awful it feels to be plagiarized.
There is no simple, one line definition of plagiarism. A professor at Tiffin University has this policy: if a student uses five or more consecutive words that are clearly attributable to another, the student earns an 'F' for the course and is recommended for university administrative discipline, including suspension. Plagiarism does not have to be intentional to be wrong - accidental failure to cite a reference is legally the same as copying it word for word and putting your name on it.
Here is a clearly written, "must read" article on plagiarism. this link will give you advice on defining, as well as avoiding plagiarism.
I use plagiarism detection software whenever i suspect that a student's work is not his or her own. If I discover plagiarism, I will give that student a grade of 'Zero'. generally, I will also give the student a chance to make it right - once. A second offense will be met with professional academic hostility - that is to say, i will give that student a 'Zero' and recommend him or her for formal disciplinary action.
You have been warned.
